Terracotta

Small-batch ceramics & table linen

Autumn collection — nineteen pieces, made once.

Everything here was made in a converted dairy outside Hudson, in batches small enough that one person can remember making each piece. When a run sells out it does not come back the same.

Piece 01

Ochre serving bowl

Thrown in three sizes on the wheel, glazed in an iron-rich ochre that pools darker where the wall thickens. Every bowl fires slightly differently, which is the point.

Piece 02

Burgundy carafe

A one-litre carafe with a thumb rest pressed into the neck. Designed to be poured with one hand at a crowded table without anybody thinking about it.

Piece 03

Bone linen runner

Woven on a narrow loom in Portugal from flax we have used since the first year, then washed four times so it lies flat straight out of the packet.

Piece 04

Smoke tumbler, set of four

Short tumblers with a slightly heavy base, glazed in a grey that goes green in daylight. They stack, which is rarer than it sounds.

How a piece gets here

Thrown

Two days a week on the wheel, in runs of thirty. Anything that wobbles goes back in the bin.

Dried

Ten days under cloth. Rushing this is how pieces crack in the kiln, so it is never rushed.

Glazed

Dipped by hand, twice. The glaze is mixed in the studio from four oxides and nothing else.

Fired

Sixteen hours to 1260°C, then two days to cool. The kiln is opened on Thursday mornings.

Visit the studio

The shelf of seconds is open to anyone who turns up on a Saturday. Slight warps, glaze runs, and the occasional thumbprint — half price, no reservations.
